Following the crushing defeat suffered by Mexico in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where England set the score at 3-2, an English journalist is calling for a friendly match at Wembley Stadium.
As suggested by Henry Winter, a journalist for The Football Boardroom, to the Football Association (FA), managed by England Football, a friendly match should be held between both national teams where fans and players exchange jerseys and have fun after the heart-stopping match played at the Estadio Azteca.
Winter referred to Mexico as a “wonderful host” after they welcomed the English with full passion for football and spirit for the players, both the English and the Mexicans.
“Dear @FA, can we please invite Mexico for a friendly at Wembley? Outside the Azteca, English fans swapping shirts with Mexicans, English and Mexican fans drinking and singing together,” Winter noted in a post on X after the Mexico vs England match.

“Mexico has been a wonderful host. It would be great to see them and their fans at Wembley. It hasn't happened since 2010,” he added.
So far, this call for a friendly match has not received a response from the British associations or either football team; however, the proposal has caused a stir.
Other journalists and football show presenters joined his request, noting that the Mexican fanbase is “truly incredible” and that Mexico City was the best host of the 2026 World Cup.
“The Mexican fans are truly incredible. Some of the kindest people I have ever met. Around 500 waited to congratulate the English fans after the match. Could not ask for a better host city,” “Amen, Henry. Wonderful people. Warm, welcoming, and magnanimous in defeat,” they commented.
Other social media users who have had the opportunity to attend more World Cups commented that they had never attended an edition where the hosts were as kind and festive as the Mexicans, even when their national team had been knocked out.
“I have never known a welcome like this in 51 years. Incredible fans. Before and after. During, all is fair in love and football and it was fierce. I just got back from partying with them and I could have stayed all night. They are the soul of football in a stale FIFA world. I will never forget them,” a netizen commented on X.
Beyond the British press and the fans, Jude Bellingham himself, who scored two goals in the match, recognized the team and their style of play, in addition to showing appreciation for the venue where the round of 16 was played.
“Mexico's players are incredible, that central midfield [Erik Lira and Edson Álvarez] runs a lot, very strong, they play with a lot of heart. It was a pleasure to play here at the Azteca against them,” the English star commented in Spanish after the match ended.
