The controversy surrounding Ángela Aguilar shows no signs of stopping. Beyond her relationship with Christian Nodal and the media attention she has received since they married two years ago, the singer has been in the eye of the storm for her way of performing Selena Quintanilla's songs.

In fact, the granddaughter of Flor Silvestre has become a topic of conversation on social media following an old video of Selena's brother, A.B. Quintanilla, which netizens resurrected, in which the singer and music producer refers to the fact that cumbias should not be sung as if they were opera.

In the video circulating on the internet, A.B. speaks about cumbia and points out that the genre is not meant to be sung as if performing opera. These comments were interpreted by netizens as a dig at Ángela, as she often sings Selena's songs at her concerts and changes the tone to show off her voice, which she has said on several occasions was trained in opera since the age of four.

"If you're going to do a tribute to an icon like Selena, please don't destroy her art with music that sounds worse than a karaoke track and singers singing classics like opera. It's not a tribute, but a lack of respect for a beautiful art," said A.B.

"Opera shouldn't be mixed with cumbia, period. When I hear opera with my cumbias, my creations that came from my heart, that's like destroying my art, because at the end of the day they are indeed Selena's songs, but composed by me, every note, every instrument in the mix," he added, defending his creative work.

Although the comments were interpreted as an indirect jab at Ángela, the context of the video focuses on a tribute paid to Selena during the 2026 Viña del Mar Festival, where singer Verónica Villarroel sang some of the Queen of Tex-Mex's hits in an operatic style.

"If the shoe doesn't fit, you don't wear it, please (...) When you are going to do a tribute, please, learn the correct lyrics," mentioned Abraham, who also added: "It's a lack of respect for the artist and the art," referring to Villarroel.

In the clip, Abraham (A.B. Quintanilla) claimed to have had "almost a heart attack" upon hearing the performances and questioned the festival organization for daring to do so, especially because the tribute was "sad," lacked production, and did not show the respect that his sister and the songs deserve.

To avoid confrontation in the comments, A.B. Quintanilla limited them on his video; however, that did not prevent the topic from being discussed by netizens in separate videos and comments.

On TikTok, the musician's statements have been repurposed to involve Ángela Aguilar in the discussion and ask her to stop singing Selena's songs, especially with her specific interpretation style; users have written that she should listen to what A.B. is asking and respect the legacy.
