Traveling to exclusive, remote, or well-known destinations for luxury experiences is a dream that not everyone can afford. A recent study by the travel insurance firm Squaremouth identified the most expensive destinations to visit in 2026, taking into account factors such as flights, lodging, car rentals, food, and the average daily cost of the trip.
To create the ranking, the company analyzed data from more than 100,000 travel insurance sales, surveys of thousands of travelers, and figures obtained from booking platforms. With this information, it created a spending index that allows for the comparison of the total cost of traveling to different places around the world.
Los 10 países y destinos más caros para visitar en 2026
1. Groenlandia
Greenland tops the list as the most expensive destination in the study. Its remote location, high transportation costs, and the price of services such as lodging, food, and car rentals influence travelers to spend an average of $1,171 per day. Additionally, the average flight exceeds $1,300.
2. Islas Vírgenes Británicas
This Caribbean territory takes second place thanks to its high accommodation costs. According to the study, a weeknight hotel stay can exceed $1,100, making it one of the most expensive beach getaways in the world.
3. Polinesia Francesa
Famous for destinations like Bora Bora and Tahiti, French Polynesia is positioned in third place. Lodging costs are among the highest in the ranking, with average rates exceeding $1,300 per night.
4. Antártida
Although it is not a country, Antarctica appears among the most expensive destinations due to the high costs of polar expeditions. The study notes that the average daily expense exceeds $1,500 and that flights to reach the starting points of these journeys are also among the most expensive.
5. Maldivas
The famous islands of the Indian Ocean continue to be one of the luxury destinations par excellence. The average cost per day exceeds $1,000, and hotels record rates close to $1,250 per night.
6. Suiza
Switzerland is the only European country to appear in the top spots of the ranking with $602 per day, combined with expensive hotels and flights. High costs for restaurants, tourist services, and lodging drive its position among the most expensive destinations on the planet. The study highlights that it also features among the countries with the most expensive food and drinks.
7. Zimbabue
This African country stands out mainly for the high costs of air transportation and trips focused on safaris and nature. The average price of flights is around $1,839, one of the highest in the analysis.

10. Anguila
The Caribbean island of Anguilla closes the top 10. The study particularly highlights its lodging costs, as it records the highest average hotel rate in the ranking at around $1,684 per night.
¿Por qué estos destinos son tan costosos?
Squaremouth found two main patterns among the most expensive places to travel. The first is related to premium experiences, such as polar expeditions, African safaris, and vacations at luxury resorts. The second has to do with geographical location, as many of these destinations are islands or remote places where transportation, supplies, and tourist services have higher costs.
Likewise, the study reveals that destinations focused on expeditions, exclusive beaches, and wildlife observation concentrate some of the highest expenses for travelers, which demonstrates that unique experiences often come accompanied by significantly higher budgets.
