Obtaining a Mexican passport is an essential requirement for traveling abroad, but requesting an appointment does not automatically guarantee that the document will be issued. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) may deny or suspend the process when it detects certain irregularities.
According to the Passport Regulations, there are judicial, administrative, and documentary causes that can prevent the issuance of this document.
1. When there is a judicial impediment
One of the most important reasons why a person might not obtain their passport is the existence of a judicial impediment. The regulation itself defines this case as a measure decreed by a judicial authority that prohibits a person from leaving the country, either as a precautionary measure or as the result of a sentence.
In these cases, the SRE is obliged to respect the determination of the competent authority and cannot issue the document while the restriction remains in effect.
2. Presenting false, altered, or fraudulent documents
Another of the most frequent reasons for refusal is the presentation of false or modified documentation. The authority reviews the documents used to prove identity, nationality, and other requirements of the process, so any alteration can lead to the immediate suspension of the procedure.
In addition to preventing the issuance of the passport, the use of false documents can lead to administrative or even criminal liability, as appropriate.
3. Inconsistencies in personal data
Discrepancies between the information contained in official documents can also cause problems. If the name, surnames, date of birth, or other data do not match between the documents presented, the SRE may request additional information or temporarily halt the process until the situation is clarified.
For this reason, before going to the appointment, it is recommended to verify that all documents contain identical and updated information.
4. Failing to correctly prove identity or Mexican nationality
The issuance of a passport requires the person to prove both their identity and their Mexican nationality through documents established by the authority. When there is reasonable doubt about any of these elements, the agency may require additional evidence before authorizing the process.
As long as such clarifications are not satisfactory, the procedure may remain suspended.
5. Attempting to obtain a second valid ordinary passport
Mexican regulations prohibit a person from holding two valid ordinary passports at the same time. For that reason, if the system detects that a valid document already exists and there is no legal cause to issue another, the application could be rejected.
In case of loss, theft, destruction, or deterioration of the document, the holder must follow the procedures established by the authority to request a new passport.
6. Lack of consent for passports for minors
When the process concerns children or adolescents, the SRE requires the consent of those who exercise parental authority or guardianship, except in cases provided for by law. The lack of authorization or the existence of judicial resolutions related to custody or parental authority may prevent the issuance of the passport.
This requirement seeks to protect the rights of minors and prevent international travel without the corresponding authorization.
What to do if you are denied a passport?
If the SRE determines that it cannot issue the document, the applicant must know the specific reason for the refusal and, when possible, correct the detected irregularity.
Depending on the case, this may involve updating documents, clarifying inconsistencies in personal information, or addressing the legal situation that caused the restriction.
In most cases, problems are related to incomplete documentation, data errors, or impediments established by competent authorities.
