Crossing the border or arriving at a U.S. airport doesn't end when you get off the plane. Before officially entering the United States, all travelers must go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) controls, where documentation, luggage, and compliance with customs and immigration regulations are verified.
If you are traveling from Mexico, reviewing these seven points before reaching the inspection point can help you avoid delays, secondary inspections, or even immigration issues.
1. Verify that your passport and visa are valid
One of the most common mistakes is traveling without checking the validity of your documents. To enter the United States for tourism, most Mexicans need to present a valid passport and a valid B1/B2 visitor visa.

It is also important to ensure that the information on your passport matches that of your visa and travel reservations. Carrying damaged documents or documents with inconsistent information can lead to additional questions during the inspection.
2. Be clear about the reason for and details of your trip
CBP officers may ask you where you are going, how long you will stay in the United States, where you will be staying, and the purpose of your visit. Immigration authorities verify that your activities match the type of visa you are presenting.
Therefore, it is advisable to have basic information on hand, such as:
- Reservaciones de hotel.
- Dirección donde te hospedarás.
- Itinerario del viaje.
- Boleto de regreso, si aplica.
3. Check what food you are carrying in your luggage
Many travelers are unaware that certain food items may be restricted or prohibited when entering the United States.
CBP requires you to declare all food, plants, agricultural products, and items related to wildlife. Some seemingly harmless products may be held to protect U.S. agriculture and public health.
If you are carrying food, it is best to declare it. Failure to do so can result in fines or penalties.
4. Make sure you are not transporting prohibited or restricted items
Before packing, verify that you are not carrying objects whose entry is prohibited or controlled.
Among the items that may require special permits or are restricted are:
- Armas de fuego.
- Municiones.
- Algunos medicamentos.
- Determinados productos animales.
- Frutas y vegetales específicos.
- Ciertos productos agrícolas.
CBP recommends checking in advance the restrictions applicable to the items you intend to bring into the country.
5. Declare cash exceeding $10,000
If you are traveling with more than $10,000 in cash or equivalent monetary instruments, you must report it to U.S. authorities.
This obligation does not mean that it is prohibited to carry that amount of money; it simply must be declared in accordance with federal rules. Failure to do so can result in the seizure of funds and other legal consequences.
6. Carry your medications properly identified
If you need to travel with medications, CBP points out that they must be declared and, preferably, kept in their original packaging along with the medical prescription issued in the passenger's name.
This recommendation is especially important for controlled substances or treatments that may raise questions during inspection.
7. Check your I-94 record after entry
Once admitted to the United States, it is advisable to check your electronic I-94 Form, the document that serves as an official entry record and shows the date until which you can legally remain in the country.
CBP allows you to consult this record online. Verifying it is important because any error in admission information can affect future applications or authorized length of stay.
Although you have a valid visa, the final decision on admission is made by an officer of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the port of entry. All travelers are subject to immigration, customs, and agricultural inspection upon arriving in the United States.
That is why, traveling with proper documents, correctly declaring the items you are transporting, and knowing customs regulations can make your entry much faster and easier.
