The Government of Mexico City reported this Monday that five people have died during activities related to the 2026 World Cup, a figure higher than the four deaths previously reported by authorities.
The Secretary of Health of Mexico City, Nadine Gasman, pointed out in a press conference that since the beginning of the World Cup on June 11, five deaths have been recorded in the capital.
The figure contrasts with the four deaths reported by the capital's government last week following celebrations for Mexico's victory over Ecuador.
During her speech, Gasman did not specify the circumstances of the fifth death or clarify whether it corresponds to a previously unreported case or an update to the official balance.
The official also reported that since the start of the tournament, authorities have provided 3,563 medical consultations and carried out 93 hospital transfers.
In this regard, Gasman presented a breakdown of medical care classified by triage levels and colors. She noted that there were 3,438 non-serious cases classified as green, 109 that required medical attention (red), and 11 considered serious with priority for transfer (yellow).
"And (color) black, which are the deceased persons: five unfortunate deaths," she mentioned.
For her part, Head of Government Clara Brugada once again expressed her condolences to the families of the people who died during last week's celebrations, but she also did not specify the number of victims.
"I once again express my condolences and all my solidarity with the families of the people who unfortunately died last Tuesday. We continue to accompany them permanently," she assured.
However, she stated that yesterday, for the Mexico-England match, concluded "with a clean slate, with practically no incidents."
Last week, capital authorities confirmed the death of four people following celebrations for Mexico's victory over Ecuador in the vicinity of the Angel of Independence, in the city center.
Three died of asphyxiation during the crowds on Paseo de la Reforma Avenue and a fourth person died later in a hospital, after having been transported from the area of the celebrations.
This same Monday, the Attorney General's Office of Mexico City reported that it is keeping the investigation open into the fourth death, which was that of a young man identified as 19-year-old Isaías Trejo, and noted that it does not rule out the possible commission of other crimes related to the case.
