A video went viral on social media in which a security guard at the Liverpool, Perisur branch, insults an Afro-Mexican young woman and accuses her of attempting to steal. After confirming that the woman did not take any items, the employee left without offering an apology.
The case sparked outrage among TikTok users and other social media platforms, where hundreds of people described the act as an act of racism and demanded that the department store take action.
Here is how the events unfolded.
Liverpool guard accuses Afro-Mexican woman of stealing because of her skin color
Through TikTok, user @NathalieGW23 reported the alleged act of racism she experienced at Liverpool Perisur on August 11th, when she went to buy a dress.
As she recounted, she noticed that a security guard began to follow her around the store. When she asked her if something was wrong or if she needed help, the employee called her a "F*cking Black woman" and accused her of stealing.
Nathalie began recording what was happening. This bothered the guard, who demanded that she stop filming her.
“Put your phone away. I do not authorize you to record me,” she is heard saying in the video.
The young woman maintains that she was profiled because of her skin color and explains that she had only gone into the bathroom. Even so, the guard insisted on checking her backpack.
“I am being profiled because of my skin color. I went to the bathroom,” states Nathalie.
“Take off your backpack,” the guard responds.
“But here comes the lady who has been following me for a while now,” the young woman retorts.
“Yes, because the lady wants to steal,” the employee accuses.
To prove her innocence, Nathalie emptied the contents of her backpack, where she carried books and folders. Upon verifying that she had stolen nothing, the guard walked away without apologizing.
The young woman also explained that throughout her visit she did not take any garments from the displays, did not bring merchandise into the fitting rooms, and never showed any suspicious behavior. Therefore, she asserted that she was singled out solely for being Afro-Mexican.
After the incident, she requested to speak with the head of security and asked them to review the cameras to clarify what happened.
“Let the route I took be reviewed so they can see that it wasn't that I grabbed something and then threw it away. That did not happen. It is profiling based on skin color,” she expressed.
At the end of the video, the head of security offers her an apology and assures her that they will review what happened to prevent a similar situation from happening again.
This is how social media reacted to the case of the Afro-Mexican woman accused of theft at Liverpool
The video quickly went viral on TikTok and has accumulated 4.7 million views and more than 21,000 comments.
While some users urged Nathalie to take legal action, others demanded the firing of the security guard. There were also people who claimed to have experienced similar situations at Liverpool stores due to their skin color or appearance.
Others pointed out that the security guard was also dark-skinned and had no reason to react that way.
Among the most prominent comments were:
