Following the controversy generated by mocking Mexican fans after the Mexican National Team's defeat against England in the 2026 World Cup, Ecuadorian host Alejandra Jaramillo offered a public apology via Instagram. However, many users claimed her words were not sincere and rejected her message.
The controversy began after the presenter, who works for TelevisaUnivision, posted a video celebrating England's triumph over Mexico and made comments that numerous fans considered offensive.
Below, we tell you what Alejandra Jaramillo said and how social media reacted.
In a video that has already accumulated more than 5 million views and over 54 thousand comments, the Univision host celebrated England's victory over Mexico, after the Mexican National Team had previously eliminated Ecuador with a score of 2-0.
"I only wanted one thing to sleep peacefully tonight. Thanks Kane, thanks Bellingham. They tell me you have Esmeraldas roots," she wrote in the video.
But what bothered Mexican fans the most was the message she posted afterward:
"You couldn't even do it with one player less. Not even with the 11 minutes of extra time. Not even by going to the hotel to shout again. CHAO. BYE BYE. SAYONARA. ARRIVEDERCHI".
¿Qué dijo Alejandra Jaramillo en sus disculpas?
Following the controversy, Alejandra Jaramillo published an almost five-minute-long video on Instagram, where she apologized to the Mexicans who had felt offended and thanked TelevisaUnivision for the opportunities it has provided her since she arrived in the United States four and a half years ago.
"I want to offer my most sincere public apologies with all my heart for having celebrated Mexico's defeat in the World Cup. I want to start by telling you that Mexico is a country that I love and respect deeply; I have Mexican friends".
Jaramillo continued:
"I have been in the United States for four and a half years fulfilling a dream of working as a communicator at the most important Spanish-language network this country has, which is Univision... and that is respected, that is loved. I truly only have gratitude for the opportunities I have had the joy of experiencing within this country... and if I made a mistake, I don't want to justify it, I just want to offer my sincere apologies from the bottom of my heart... If I'm being perfectly honest, there was never an offense, nor an insult, nor mistreatment toward anyone from Mexico as a nation, toward Mexico as a country. That did not exist...".
She also asserted that she has always tried to conduct herself with respect.
"I have always carried the flag of love and respect for all people while I walk through this life. I believe that colors, flags, audiences, and people should be respected, especially Latinos. I am a Latina mother, a migrant, who came to this country to start from scratch... I am very grateful to TelevisaUnivision for walking hand-in-hand with me in this process... My most sincere apologies if anyone felt offended. Soccer is meant to be enjoyed".
The apology video quickly went viral and hundreds of users claimed they did not believe her words nor accept her apology. Some even used the same expressions the host used to mock El Tri.
Among the comments, highlights include:
- "Perfecto, esperemos que trabajes en una compañía ecuatoriana o de Inglaterra. Nadie te cree".
- "Ahorita no andamos aceptando disculpas".
- "No andamos aceptando palabras falsas y obligadas. Bye, sayonara, arrivederchi... ¿o cómo era?".
- "¡Bien obligadota!".
