President Emmanuel Macron expressed his support for the captain of the France national football team, Kylian Mbappé, by denouncing the "racist attacks" he suffered at the hands of a Paraguayan senator following Paraguay's defeat in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, the Élysée stated on Monday.
"The President of the Republic supports Kylian Mbappé and the French team in the face of the racist attacks directed at the captain of Les Bleus. The Paraguayan president has written to the French president to that effect, condemning the statements that were made, as did the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay", the French presidency indicated.
Senator Celeste Amarilla viciously attacked the French footballer after her country's defeat. She called him "a brute" who "never learned to write" and a "colonized Cameroonian, pretending hard to be French, resentful, nouveau riche, arrogant, and ugly."
The French captain responded via a message on X: "You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has poured out passion and honor throughout the entire competition. Because of your recklessness and your uninhibited racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort your players made during this World Cup."

The French Football Federation (FFF) joined the footballer's criticisms and described Amarilla's words as "abject and unacceptable."
"These comments dishonor those who make them and those who spread them. The players of the French Team represent France; it is our country that is being insulted," the FFF added in its statement.
Its president, Philippe Diallo, specified on X that Amarilla's comments "are criminal and condemnable."
"They must be prosecuted here as anywhere else. The FFF is proceeding with a referral to the prosecutor's office for the purpose of legal prosecution," he added.
