For years it remained out of reach for the public, but after a major renovation, the place was transformed into a modern exhibition area that allows you to learn the history of the monument from a completely different perspective.
One of the most striking elements of the new experience are the replicas of the graffiti left by the workers who participated in the construction of the Lincoln Memorial more than 100 years ago.
These inscriptions offer a closer look at the people who made the construction of the monument possible, showing small traces of their time on the project and providing a more human dimension to the history of this iconic site.

The Lincoln Memorial Undercroft has nearly 1,400 square meters dedicated to exhibitions and interactive experiences.
Through multimedia resources, projections, and touch screens, visitors can explore how the monument was designed and built, as well as understand the evolution of its meaning across different generations.
Glass walls allow you to observe the impressive interior structure, while audiovisual projections recreate historic moments directly onto the foundations of the monument, creating a much more immersive experience than a traditional visit.

The tour also includes a large exhibition where replicas of different architectural and sculptural elements of the monument are presented.
Visitors can learn about the symbolism of every detail, explore the original designs created by architect Henry Bacon, and discover how one of the most recognizable monuments in the United States came to be.
Among the highlighted pieces are original signed copies of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment, fundamental documents in American history.
Additionally, those who visit the site will be able to sit on a replica of the famous Lincoln seat and recreate one of the most iconic images of Washington.

Admission to the space is free, although it requires reserving a time in advance.
Reservations can be made online and each person can request up to six tickets per transaction. Free same-day tickets are also offered, although demand is usually high, especially during weekends and peak tourist seasons.

The Lincoln Memorial remains open 24 hours a day throughout the year. Additionally, it has service staff and park rangers during daytime and nighttime hours.
The easiest ways to get there are through the Washington Metro system, using the Foggy Bottom or Smithsonian stations, as well as bus routes that connect to the National Mall.
For decades, visitors could only admire the visible part of the Lincoln Memorial. Now, thanks to the opening of the Undercroft, it is possible to go under its foundations to discover stories, objects, and spaces that remained hidden for more than a century.
