Families with children in Canada will receive greater financial support during the 2026-2027 payment period thanks to the increase in the Canada Child Benefit (CCB). The Canadian government announced that the amounts of this tax-free benefit will be adjusted upward to help households cope with the increase in the cost of living and expenses associated with raising children.
The announcement was made in Halifax, Nova Scotia, by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada, Lena Metlege Diab, on behalf of Anna Gainey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Children, Families and Social Development.

Starting this month, eligible families will be able to receive up to:
8,157 dollars per year for each child under 6 years old, which represents an increase of up to 160 dollars compared to the previous year.
6,883 dollars per year for each child between 6 and 17 years old, an increase of up to 135 dollars compared to the previous cycle.
These resources seek to alleviate essential family expenses, such as food, clothing, school supplies, childcare, and other daily needs.

The Canada Child Benefit is one of the most important family support programs in the country. Currently, it reaches around 3.6 million Canadian families and contributes to the well-being of almost 6 million children.
Each year, the government allocates nearly 30 billion dollars in tax-free payments through this program, with the goal of primarily supporting low- and middle-income households.
In the case of Nova Scotia, more than 96,000 families receive this benefit annually, which represents an investment of over 761 million dollars in the province. Additionally, approximately 153,000 children are supported through this program.

The government recalled that the CCB has been indexed to inflation since 2018, which allows payments to increase each year to maintain their purchasing power against the rising cost of living.
The update of the amounts goes into effect every July 1, a date that marks the beginning of a new program payment year, which runs until June 30 of the following year.

The amount each household receives depends on several factors, including:

As an example, a family with two children, one 5 years old and another 9 years old, and with an adjusted net family income of 65,000 dollars, could receive approximately 11,430 dollars during the 2026-2027 fiscal year, about 400 dollars more than in the previous period.
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Children, Families and Social Development, Anna Gainey, highlighted the importance of this update for millions of families across the country.
“Starting Monday, the Canada Child Benefit will increase for 3.6 million Canadian families. This increase in the monthly payment will help cover daily expenses like school supplies, clothing, and food. When we invest in children, we invest in our future and build a strong Canada.”
For her part, Minister Lena Metlege Diab stressed that strengthening families means strengthening communities.
“Strong families are the foundation of strong communities and a strong Canada. The Canada Child Benefit provides significant support to parents, helping them with the costs of raising children and offering every child the opportunity to thrive. By ensuring payments are adjusted for inflation, we continue to invest in families and the future of Canada.”
