Obtaining approval for a US visa is one of the most important steps to travel to the United States, but many applicants wonder: how long does it take for the document to arrive after the interview?
The United States Embassy in Mexico clarified this topic through its social media and explained the estimated delivery times.
According to information shared by the diplomatic mission, delivery usually takes between 3 and 4 weeks for a card, while a visa stamped in the passport generally takes 5 to 7 business days after it has been approved. However, these deadlines may vary depending on demand and administrative processes.
Applicants can receive their visa in different ways. One option is to pick it up at a DHL branch; another is to request home delivery via the premium delivery service, which has an additional cost. There is also the possibility of picking up the document at the Applicant Service Center (CAS) selected during the application process.
How to request home delivery of the visa?
If, after approval, you want your visa to arrive directly at your home, you must log in to your account on the US visa appointment portal. Once inside, select the “Continue” option and then “Premium Delivery.” After that, you will only have to choose the desired delivery method and follow the instructions to make the corresponding payment.
How to track your visa shipment?
Once the tracking number is generated, you can track the document in two ways. The first is by accessing the portal where you scheduled your appointment, where a truck icon will appear once the shipment has been processed.
This platform will also show the delivery status:
In transit: DHL has already collected the visa at the embassy or consulate.
Out for delivery: the package is heading to the selected branch.
Ready for pickup: the visa is now available to be picked up.
The second alternative is to check the DHL website directly using the tracking number received by email.
What do you need to pick up your visa?
When picking up your document, you must present an official ID and the corresponding tracking number. It is important to note that if the visa is not picked up within the first 30 days, it will be returned to the Applicant Service Center.
When can you travel to the United States?
The good news is that there is no additional waiting period. Once you have the visa in your hands, you can use it immediately to enter the United States, as long as you meet the applicable immigration requirements.
Visa validity and length of stay
The US B1/B2 tourist visa usually has a validity of up to 10 years. Two key dates appear on the document: the date of issue and the expiration date. As long as the visa remains valid, it can be used to make trips during that period.
However, one of the most common mistakes is to think that those 10 years are equivalent to the time a person can remain on US territory. In reality, each entry into the country is evaluated by an officer from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office, who determines how long the visitor can stay. In many cases, a stay of up to 180 days is authorized, although the final decision always depends on the immigration authorities at the time of entry.
