Prince Harry, his wife, the American Meghan Markle, and their two children arrived in England this Wednesday, several British media outlets reported, to settle for an indefinite period after living in the United States for the last six years.
Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, had been living in California since they stepped back from being part of the royal family in 2020, amidst a bitter dispute with their family that worsened with the publication of the prince's memoir, titled "Spare."
The couple, whose return to the UK was revealed by the press last week, traveled aboard a private plane and landed at noon at Birmingham Airport, according to various media outlets.
The British press had reported last week that the couple's two children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, are enrolled in a British school for the upcoming school year, which begins in September.
"The desire for their children to receive a British education can be a very significant pull factor for people who, like Harry, attended a private school and want the same for their children," explained Craig Prescott, a professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, and an expert on the British Constitution and monarchy, to AFP.
Harry and Meghan are no longer active members of the royal family and are not expected to resume official duties.
"Officially, they will be private citizens and, therefore, in principle, will be able to do what they want and earn money as they see fit. However, they will have to find a balance between leveraging their link to the monarchy and respecting the institution. This has always been the problem. Beyond being known as former members of the royal family, they have not particularly managed to define a role or field of their own," explains Prescott.

Meghan, who used to work in acting, reportedly participated in conversations to work on the Netflix series "The Gentlemen," filmed in England. However, some media outlets claimed that she will ultimately not do it.
"There is a feeling that things had reached a stalemate in the United States. The deal with Netflix has been reduced considerably, perhaps with only some of Meghan's show specials in the works, and everything has become much quieter," explains Prescott.
According to the press, the couple has already chosen a new house, mentioning the Cotswolds region, an exclusive area of the countryside near Oxford, northwest of London, as a possible place of residence for the family.
The British press had reported that King Charles III, 77, Harry's father, was informed in mid-August of his son's return.
The news came a few weeks after Charles III and his wife Camilla hosted Harry, Meghan, and their two children in London on July 10. This was their first meeting in four years.
In May 2025, in a long interview with the BBC, Harry said he would like to reconcile with his father, who was diagnosed with cancer two years ago, and said he felt "really sad" about not being able to show his homeland to his children.

Although the King was informed of his youngest son's return, it has not been clear whether his brother, Prince William, heir to the throne, and his wife Kate also received the news.
The two brothers are estranged and, according to the press, do not speak to each other.
The question of security for Harry and his family when they are in the UK has been a sensitive issue for several years.
Upon leaving the country, they lost their automatic police protection. The prince has denounced on several occasions a decision that, according to him, put his children in danger.
The Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, stated that the couple's security and its funding were "a private matter."
According to a YouGov poll, more than 70% of Britons believe that Harry and Meghan should fund all or a large part of their security.
