Are you going to process your Mexican passport and have doubts about which documents you will need? There is a lot of talk about the biometric CURP, but rest assured, you do not need it to process your passport.
According to official information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the biometric CURP is not among the mandatory documents to process or renew a Mexican passport. In fact, requirements were recently reduced.
To obtain a Mexican passport, it is necessary to prove Mexican nationality and present a valid official identification. If nationality cannot be verified through government databases, the applicant must present additional documentation to prove it.
Among the documents you can present are:
- Acta de nacimiento expedida por la oficina del registro civil mexicano o por oficina consular;
- Certificado de nacionalidad mexicana;
- Declaratoria de nacionalidad mexicana por nacimiento;
- Carta de naturalización;
- Cédula de identidad ciudadana, o
- Certificado de matrícula consular.
Likewise, authorities have reiterated that the incorporation of biometric data into the CURP does not determine the issuance of a passport or other immigration procedures related to obtaining this document.

The biometric CURP is an enhanced version of the Unique Population Registry Code (CURP) that incorporates personal identification elements such as a photograph, fingerprints, iris scan, and other biometric data. Its goal is to strengthen identity verification mechanisms and reduce the risks of identity theft.

The biometric CURP is designed to serve as a means of identification in various administrative and governmental procedures. Its main uses include:
Proving identity before public institutions.
Facilitating government procedures and services.
Verifying personal data more securely.
Strengthening official identification mechanisms.

Despite this, authorities have clarified that it is not a mandatory requirement to obtain a Mexican passport.

The current fees to process a Mexican passport are:
- Pasaporte de 1 año: 920 pesos.
- Pasaporte de 3 años: 1,795 pesos.
- Pasaporte de 6 años: 2,440 pesos.
- Pasaporte de 10 años: 4,280 pesos.

Once the appointment is scheduled at an SRE office or a consular representation, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
Acreditar la nacionalidad mexicana
If nationality cannot be corroborated through official databases, one of the following documents must be presented:
- Acta de nacimiento expedida por el Registro Civil mexicano o por una oficina consular.
- Certificado de nacionalidad mexicana.
- Declaratoria de nacionalidad mexicana por nacimiento.
- Carta de naturalización.
- Cédula de identidad ciudadana.
- Certificado de matrícula consular.
Presentar identificación oficial vigente
Some of the accepted IDs are:
- Credencial para votar del INE.
- Matrícula consular.
- Licencia de conducir.
Presentar comprobante de pago y hoja de cita
It is also necessary to bring:
- Comprobante original del pago de derechos.
- Hoja de confirmación de la cita.
In the case of minors, the presence and identification of both parents or guardians are required.
¿Cómo es el trámite el día de la cita?
Authorities recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time and presenting all required documentation.
It is important to remember that it is no longer necessary to bring printed photographs, as the image is captured digitally at SRE offices. During the process, fingerprints are also taken and an iris scan is performed to issue the document.
After validating the information and completing the data capture, the passport is usually delivered the same day.
