The implementation of the biometric CURP in Mexico has raised questions about the procedures for which it will be required. One of the most frequently asked questions is whether this new document will be mandatory to apply for a US visa. However, the answer is clear: the biometric CURP is not a requirement to process an American tourist visa.
Currently, the only essential official Mexican document to start the process is a valid Mexican passport. Although information related to the applicant's identity is requested during the application, this does not mean that it is necessary to have the new biometric version of the CURP.
¿Qué papel juega la CURP en la solicitud de la visa?
When filling out the DS-160 form, which is the official document to apply for a non-immigrant visa to the United States, a personal data section is included where the national identification number is requested. In the case of Mexican citizens, this data corresponds to the Unique Population Registry Code (CURP).
However, authorities do not require that said CURP be biometric. It is enough to provide the identification number that the applicant already possesses.
¿Qué es la CURP biométrica?
The biometric CURP is an enhanced version of the Unique Population Registry Code that incorporates additional identification elements, including:
- Fotografía del ciudadano.
- Huellas dactilares.
- Escaneo de iris.
- Otros datos biométricos de identificación.
Its objective is to improve security in identification processes and reduce the risk of identity theft or impersonation.
¿Para qué sirve la CURP biométrica?
Authorities have noted that this document is designed to be used in various administrative and identification procedures, including:
- Acreditar la identidad ante instituciones públicas.
- Facilitar trámites y servicios gubernamentales.
- Verificar datos personales con mayor seguridad.
- Fortalecer los mecanismos de identificación oficial.
- Servir como documento de identificación cuando el ciudadano decida presentarlo.
Despite these functions, the biometric CURP is not a mandatory requirement to obtain a Mexican passport or a US visa.
Requisitos para solicitar la visa americana
The B1/B2 visa is the most common for Mexicans who wish to travel to the United States for tourism, business, or to visit family.
Pasaporte mexicano vigente
The first requirement is to have a valid passport, as its number must be registered on the DS-160 form and the document must be presented both at the Applicant Service Center (CAS) and during the consular interview.
Formulario DS-160
The process begins with filling out the DS-160 form. Once finished, the system generates a confirmation page with a barcode that will be used to track the application.
Pago de derechos
Subsequently, the applicant must create their profile in the corresponding appointment system and pay the $185 visa application fee. This payment is mandatory, but it does not guarantee approval of the document.
Cita en el CAS
Before the interview, applicants must go to the Applicant Service Center for photography and biometric data collection.
The basic documents they must present are:
- Pasaporte mexicano vigente.
- Hoja de confirmación del formulario DS-160.
- Confirmación impresa de la cita.
Entrevista en la embajada o consulado
On the day of the interview, applicants must go with:
- Pasaporte mexicano vigente.
- Confirmación impresa del formulario DS-160.
It is also recommended to bring the appointment confirmation and the payment receipt.
¿Qué evalúan los oficiales consulares?
One of the most important aspects is to demonstrate strong ties to Mexico. Consular officers seek to confirm that the applicant will return to the country after their temporary stay in the United States.
Among the elements that can favor approval are:
- Tener un empleo estable.
- Estar inscrito en una institución educativa.
- Mantener vínculos familiares en México.
- Contar con recursos económicos suficientes para el viaje.
Documentos adicionales que pueden ayudar
Although they are usually not requested initially, some documents can serve to support the application if the consular officer requires additional information:
- Constancia laboral.
- Carta de estudiante.
- Recibos de nómina.
- Estados de cuenta bancarios.
- Comprobantes de devolución de impuestos.
