Meteorologists reported that Genevieve became a Category 5 hurricane early Monday, the first in the eastern Pacific region in two years. It is expected to remain offshore, on a path roughly parallel to the coast of Mexico.

Genevieve was recording maximum sustained winds of 260 km/h (160 mph), according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The center of Genevieve was located about 855 kilometers (530 miles) southwest of Manzanillo, and it was moving toward the northwest at 20 km/h (13 mph).
