Emma Coronel has been a topic of conversation in recent days after speaking about one of the most difficult episodes of her life: the two years and seven months she spent in prison in the United States. What did the model say? Below, we give you the details.
During her debut as a streamer in a live broadcast on Kick, alongside content creators Wilito and Lonche de Huevito, the wife of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán revealed how she dealt with the confinement, the moments of isolation, and the consequences that, as she explained, her relationship with the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel brought upon her.
In addition to sharing how she met 'El Chapo' Guzmán when she was 17 years old at a party and her wedding a year later, Emma Coronel spoke about the difficulties she faced while she remained deprived of her liberty in complete isolation, inside a 2x2 meter room.
The model explained that, to cope with her time in prison, she resorted to psychiatric treatment and participated in different activities within the correctional facility.
“I was in a small room, I didn't come out,” she revealed, adding: “You say: ‘Oh, okay, they didn’t give me the [full] sentence limit, but they didn’t give me freedom either.’ So you adopt the mindset that I am going to be here for this long. That is how you assimilate it and decide how you are going to spend your time,” she told the influencers.
She also said: “I had a bad time all the time. Over there, you feel everything double.” It should be noted that the model spent two years and seven months incarcerated in the United States; during her stay in prison, Coronel was prohibited from interacting with other inmates and was limited to living in a room with a bathroom inside, a table, and a bed.
“Sometimes you would yell at someone from cell to cell. For my part, I would have liked to be in the middle of everyone, to go out,” said the drug kingpin's wife.
She had previously spoken about her time in prison in the documentary she released with HBO Max, titled 'Married to El Chapo: Emma Coronel Speaks.' At the time, she shared that she suffered in prison, not only because of the conditions, but because she was away from her daughters, the twins she had with 'El Chapo,' Emali Guadalupe and María Joaquina.
Why was Emma Coronel imprisoned?
Emma Coronel was arrested on February 22, 2021, at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, United States. Four months later, in June, 'El Chapo's' wife pleaded guilty to charges of international drug trafficking, money laundering, and criminal violation of the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act, according to documentation from the United States Department of Justice.
Initially, she had been sentenced to 36 months in prison plus four years of supervised release, but by pleading guilty, her sentence was reduced and she was released from prison in September 2023, a little over two years after her arrest.
