Traveling to the United States for the first time can raise many questions regarding the necessary documents, immigration controls, and regulations to follow during your stay. Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) recommends that Mexican citizens prepare in advance to avoid setbacks from the moment of boarding the plane until their return to Mexico. These are some of the most important tips you should take into account before and during your trip.
1. Verifica que cuentas con visa vigente
Mexican citizens need a valid visa to enter the United States. In addition to the visa, it is mandatory to present a valid Mexican passport at the time of entry.
2. Revisa la vigencia de tu pasaporte
The SRE recommends that your passport have at least six months of validity before making any international trip. It is also important that the holder's personal details and identity fully match the information contained in the document.
3. Lleva comprobantes de tu viaje
Upon arriving in the United States, an immigration officer will review your documentation and determine how long you may stay in the country. During the inspection, they may ask you for:
- Comprobante de vuelo de regreso.
- Reservaciones de hospedaje.
- Información sobre el motivo de tu visita.
Having a visa does not automatically guarantee entry into the country. The US immigration authority is responsible for deciding whether to authorize entry and the permitted length of stay.
5. Declara cantidades mayores a 10 mil dólares
If you enter or leave the United States with more than 10,000 dollars in cash or its equivalent, you must declare it to the appropriate authorities. Failure to do so may result in penalties and legal issues.
6. No transportes artículos prohibidos
The entry of firearms, tear gas, and pepper spray is prohibited. Before traveling, it is advisable to check customs regulations to avoid inconvenience at inspection points.
7. Regístrate en el SIRME
The SRE recommends registering or updating your information in the Registration System for Mexicans Abroad (SIRME). This tool makes it easier for Mexican authorities to locate you and provide information or assistance in case of an emergency.
8. Lleva copias de tus documentos
It is advisable to carry an official photo ID and a copy of your Mexican passport. Additionally, having digital versions saved on a device or in the cloud can be very helpful in case of any unforeseen event.
9. Contrata un seguro de viaje internacional
Although not mandatory, the SRE recommends having travel insurance that includes medical coverage. Healthcare services in the United States can be very expensive for visitors.
10. Comparte tu itinerario con familiares
Before traveling, inform family or friends about your flights, places of lodging, and planned routes. This can facilitate communication and assistance in emergency situations.
11. Respeta siempre las leyes locales
During your stay, you must comply with the laws and regulations of the place you are visiting. Lack of knowledge of the rules does not exempt you from responsibility or prevent potential penalties.
If you need support or immediate protection, you can contact the Information and Assistance Center for Mexicans (CIAM) at 520-623-7874, available 24 hours a day. You can also contact the Consular Network of Mexico in the United States.
When minors travel abroad, it is essential to have their valid passport. If the minor is traveling without one of their parents or guardians, additional documentation such as the Minor Departure Form may be required.
Likewise, immigration or customs authorities may request documents proving guardianship or kinship with the minor.
The SRE recommends always carrying a copy of these documents and keeping the originals in a safe place. This can facilitate identification and the processing of any paperwork or emergency.
15. Evita conductas que puedan generarte problemas legales
There are actions that can lead to fines, detentions, or even imprisonment, including:
- Transportar sustancias ilícitas.
- Conducir bajo los efectos del alcohol o drogas.
- Manejar sin una licencia válida.
- Incumplir reglamentos de tránsito.
16. Infórmate antes de rentar o conducir un automóvil
Rental agencies usually accept valid Mexican licenses. However, it is recommended to check the traffic rules of the state you will be visiting, obey speed limits, stop signs, and parking restrictions to avoid fines.
17. Usa siempre el cinturón de seguridad
In the United States, the use of seat belts is mandatory for everyone traveling in a vehicle. Failure to comply may lead to financial penalties and trouble with the authorities.
Requirements for entry, stay, and exit can change without notice. Therefore, the SRE recommends constantly checking official sources before traveling to verify that you comply with all current regulations.
The main recommendation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to plan the trip in advance, verify the validity of documents, respect U.S. laws, and stay informed through official channels. Following these measures can make your first visit to the United States safer, more orderly, and free of setbacks.
