If you are about to apply for or renew your Mexican passport, there is a very common question: is it still necessary to bring passport-sized photographs? The general answer is no. Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) captures the photograph and other biometric data directly during the appointment, so most applicants no longer need to bring printed photographs.

In SRE passport offices and many consular offices, the applicant's image is captured digitally as part of the biometric registration process. In addition to the photograph, staff takes fingerprints and performs an iris scan to integrate the information into the travel document.
Therefore, those who apply for a Mexican passport under normal conditions only need to show up with the required documentation and do not need to come with photos.

Yes. Although the general rule is that photographs are taken at the SRE offices, the agency notes in its official requirements that, extraordinarily, they may request the submission of two passport-sized photographs, in color, facing forward, with a white background, without glasses, and taken recently.
This provision is usually applied in specific cases or when an office requires additional documentation to expedite the process. Therefore, the recommendation is to check the instructions for the office where the appointment will take place or follow the instructions the SRE sends when confirming the process.

Document that proves Mexican nationality (birth certificate, naturalization letter, certificate of nationality, among others, when necessary).

¿Cómo es la cita?
On the day of the appointment, it is recommended to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Once the staff verifies the documentation, the biometric data is captured, including the official photograph that will appear on the passport. Subsequently, depending on the office and the workload, the document may be delivered after a waiting time that generally ranges from 10 to 60 minutes.
Most people no longer need to bring photographs to apply for the Mexican passport, because the SRE takes the digital image during the biometric appointment. However, the agency maintains an exception in which, extraordinarily, it may request two passport-sized photographs for certain processes or specific situations. Therefore, it is advisable to carefully check the instructions received when scheduling the appointment.
